The University is the cooperation representative of oil and gas Universities in Russia. It is the largest technical University on the European North of the country.

The University is founded on the base of the Ukhta Industrial Institute (the Institute was founded in 1967). By this time more than 25000 engineers and economists have been graduated for oil, geology, building and timber industries.

After the successful attestation on 14 April 1999 the Institute was given the status of the State Technical University.

The Graduates – engineers became mayors, ministers, heads of educational establishments, enterprises and banks. 423 instructors and scientific workers teach in The University. Among them 53 Doctors of Science, Professors, 213 Masters of Science, Associate professors. Among them there are academicians and 4 corresponding members of RAEеN, and also Honored Scientists of the Komi Republic.

The Scietific research activity of teachers, postgraduate students, undergraduates and students of The University is carried out directly in the educational process and inside 13 scientific pedagogical schools.The scientific potential of the staff is used in many scientific industrial innovation centers: The center of industrial safety and examination of industrial objects, The Regional innovation center of energy saving, The engineering service center and the others.

Every year more than 15 scientific conferences and seminars are held in The University on the regional, all Russian and international levels. Every year almost half of The University students take part in the scientific forums in their own University and in the other Russian Universities as well. In the post graduate course of The Universitycandidates and competitors study on 23 specialities of the professional education. Two specialized councils are opened to uphold candidate and doctor dissertations on three technical specialities.The regional departments of Russian Academy of Science and Academy of industrial ecology function in The University.

The University has a ground fiber-optic communication with Wi-Fi and a fully functional center of access to the global network Internet. The University disposes the corporative computer system with the fiber optic trunk which consolidates all faculties, sub-faculties and University departments and is build on the base of Internet technologies. The University Centre of distance education makes available necessary methodical and studying information for past-time students without leaving their homes. In Ukhta The University has 10 study laboratory buildings, 5 student hostels, studying sport centre «Burevestnik», a hockey stadium, three canteens and refreshment rotoms in different buildings, a medical room, a studying geodesic base and the recreation complex "Krokhal" 15 km away from the town. There are also two alpine skiing routs (a summer and a winter ones) in Ukhta and in the Urals, a studying oil rig and a studying experimental forestry.

The scientivic and technical library is one of the biggest in Komi Republic. It provides manuals, scientific and methodical literature; it has branches, 5 reading rooms in the training buildings and an electronic catalogue.

The University has publishing printing facilities where the newspapers «Polytechnic», «Alma Mater», «PRofkom», analytic newspaper «Concept» and the image magazine are published.

The University cooperates with educational establishments of Norway (Bodo University College),Germany (Regensburg University of Applied Science), France, Great Britain, Hungary, Finland (Oulu University of applied sciences), The USA (University of West Georgia), China (Liaoning Shihua University), Czech Republic (Technical University of Ostrava). The contracts on training specialists cooperating with foreign Universities intend to get the diploma and have short term probation periods, to take part in joint projects and European grants.

The University has close ties with all gas and oil producing enterprises of Komi Republic and also with mining, timber and building industries of Russia. The main aspect of these cooperation is well-qualified specialist training.

At The University we have: the student theatre studio "Phresky", Ball room dance groups "Nezhnost" and “Duet”, up to date dance group "United Bit", eastern dance club “Nargiz” vocal group, Poets club, Tourist club, 15 sport groups and sections.

The University is proud of the professional basketball club “Planet-University”, which plays in the major league of Russian men’s basketball team Championship.
